Position Description Summary:
The Design Program within the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. The position is a full-time, nine-month ranked non-tenure position with a renewable three-year commitment beginning in Fall 2022. The position accrues all benefits offered to full-time faculty including eligibility for sabbatical and fellowship leave, University funding competitions, and promotion processes.
The new faculty member will teach, advise and mentor students in the
BFA
in Graphic Design, and play a significant role in developing and implementing Design curricula. All faculty are expected to be actively involved in their design discipline and to produce creative research and work. The Corcoran School will sustain the new faculty member's research with startup funding and support for initiating opportunities for collaboration and grant funding across the University. Responsibilities include participation in School, College, and/or University service.
The Corcoran School of the Arts and Design is an interdisciplinary art and design environment within a large, diverse research university. Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching Graphic Design studio and seminar classes at all levels of the Graphic Design
BFA
with the possibility of teaching in the Interaction Design
BFA
/MA and the Exhibition Design MA.
Maintaining a professional design practice and/or scholarly research.
Contributing to Design curricula development and innovation;
Contributing to Design program identity development;
Mentoring and advising undergraduate students;
Actively recruiting students;
Evaluating student performance;
Maintaining departmental and student records;
Participating in Program, School, College and/or University service and university meetings as they relate to faculty and committee service.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have at the time of application:
An
MFA
in a design field or a terminal degree in a related field from an accredited institution or a minimum of five years of professional experience;
A well-established and active professional design career (client-driven or self-initiated) whose creative practice and/or research interests include a core focus on graphic or communication design and include a combination of some of the following areas: print media, typography, motion graphics, brand identity, UI/UX, interaction design, data visualization, exhibition design, socially-engaged design, and/or related design practices;
At least two years of successful university-level teaching experience (or equivalent) beyond the assistantship level with experience of current, emerging, and experimental topics in graphic and communication design education;
Broad based expertise in contemporary issues and practices in graphic design for print and screen;
Fluency in the tools, technologies, and software of contemporary design production and instruction;
Excellent interpersonal skills as evidenced through student work, teaching evaluations and/or professional recommendations.

The Design Program at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design is grounded in human-centered problem-solving in an interdisciplinary design context, educating undergraduate and graduate students in , , and . Students in the
BFA
in Graphic Design focus on the art of persuasive, visual problem solving, beginning their study in a foundations program that develops relationships across studio areas and fosters multi-disciplinary approaches to making and problem-solving that can sustain a life-long investigative practice. The relationships between technical specialization, concept ideation, design research processes and methods, messaging and communication strategies develop and grow as students progress through the curriculum, culminating their work with a year-long thesis project. Faculty draw on studio resources across the Corcoran School, including the Digital Fabrication Lab and a Printmaking area that focuses on book arts and print media as public practice with capacity in screenprinting, letterpress, etching, lithograph, and risograph. The Gelman Library holds extensive collections, including special collection. Developing collaborations with Computer Science and the Innovation Center in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences are sites of growing conversations, curricular connections, and student participation.
