Overview
12 month fixed term contract
Based in London (with travel on an as needed basis), this position will form part of the EMEA Legal team reporting into the Vice President Legal, EMEA and APAC. The legal department provides comprehensive and proactive legal support to the UK and EMEA business. There is expected to be particular focus on the general commercial work required to drive Discovery’s business, in relation to the distribution of its D2C products (especially as part of key commercial partnerships and JVs), the distribution of its linear channels and services, advertising and marketing partnerships and generally all issues impacting on our fast moving business as may be needed from time to time.
Responsibilities
• Drafting and negotiating advertising sales representative contracts, advising on all aspects of the operation of the advertising sales and sponsorship business in UK and EMEA.
• Advising on the operation of JVs as required
• Assisting with regulatory issues as required
• Negotiating and drafting key affiliate and distribution partnership deals
• Providing the local senior management team with strategic input on business initiatives as appropriate;
• Working closely with the regional legal teams across EMEA to improve efficiencies and implement best practices

Qualifications
Skills
• Technically very proficient lawyer – needs to have excellent understanding of contract law principles and excellent drafting skills. Must be UK qualified lawyer - excellent academics; training and experience at top City law firm or In-house Legal department an advantage.
• Negotiation skills must be proven – to deliver both proper legal protection to the company and excellent commercial results.
• Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to work effectively at all levels within the company:
• Clear and concise communicator (both orally and written) – ability to present and distil legally complex issues into legally compliant but practical and commercial solutions, in a way that engages the key stakeholders.
• Well organised and attention to detail: this role requires focus and energy to ensure that nothing falls between the cracks.
• Must be fluent in English.
Knowledge
• Experience in a broadcast/media company would be a key advantage, especially if that experience is in relation to the territories within UK/EMEA.
• Good commercial knowledge essential – must have a deep understanding of the impact that deals potentially have on other business or revenue streams so as to involve other parts of the business as appropriate.
