Full Time Job
Senior Editor, Food & Wine
We want to provide the most engaging and influential coverage of the Bay Area's food and wine culture, which is among the most dynamic on the planet. Team members strive to be the best food and wine journalists in the region, reporting with accuracy and depth, telling stories through vivid and entertaining language and images, and critiquing with insight and flair. The team breaks news, pulls off in-depth coverage of trends, people and issues - and provides a constant stream of utility coverage with guidance on where and what to eat and drink.
The team's goal is to lead the conversation - online, on social media, in-person - around food and wine. The senior editor's role is to help the team achieve that goal by providing a vision and direction that builds on and expands the work already being done.
The Food & Wine Pillars
• What and where to eat and drink: We search out, report on and review the full range of Bay Area food and drink places: the newest buzzy restaurants, classics, neighborhood joints, immigrants' kitchens and tech company commissaries, markets and shops, tech-y delivery services, popups and food trucks. We stick our necks out and make informed judgments: What tastes good? What is worth the price?
• Food and wine culture: Food and drink is central to the Bay Area's identity. Through it, we can tell the story of who we are. We cover the news of restaurants and wineries and makers; we zero in on trends ahead of the competition and provide evergreen utility and service journalism that feeds our audiences' need for hyper-local information. We bring to life the people behind the food and wine: chefs, farmers, mixologists, bakers, biochemists, financiers. Our coverage paints a rich, detailed picture of the contemporary dining and drinking scene.
• We do this to engage our local audience, but also to inform and attract food and wine lovers across the globe.
• Creative journalism: We look for stories that transcend categories (the food/business story. Food/health. Wine/tech). We tell stories in a variety of ways - first-person, through images, at length or in a tweet, and in a variety of newsletters. And we always look to surprise our readers.
Expectations
This editor is:
• The visionary for the Chronicle's food and wine coverage, able to see and distill trends and share that vision with the staff and the newsroom.

• A quick, adept editor: Must feel comfortable editing on deadline and must know how to work with writers to make a good story great.
• A big-picture editor who can spark an ambitious team and individual projects. The Bay Area food scene has a significant place on the national stage. Our coverage should regularly reflect that.
• Online savvy: Our primary goal is building digital subscriptions. This editor needs a deep understanding of SEO best practices and how people search for information on food and drink . Must be conversant with all social media and able to work with newsroom content management systems.
• A visually oriented journalist who makes design, graphics and photography staff fundamental partners in the team's coverage.
• Never satisfied with the status quo.
